There is no universal scenic road that avoids holiday traffic; choosing a route for the scenery and checking live travel conditions are two different jobs.

Florida’s Atlantic and Gulf Coast towns can make a warm-weather alternative to mountain roads. In the Northeast, choose a compact harbor-town route and expect earlier darkness and potential ice rather than scheduling every lighthouse on one day.
What to skip on a winter road trip
High-elevation scenic roads often close seasonally. At Mount Rainier, winter driving access is concentrated on the southwest approach and the park specifies chain-carry requirements; do not advertise a cross-park circuit. At Yellowstone, most park roads are closed to ordinary vehicles in winter. A winter trip can still be excellent, but its open roads are not the same as a summer itinerary.
A simple three-day holiday itinerary
Day one: travel to one overnight base before dark. Day two: choose a single scenic drive and one indoor or town-based alternative. Day three: use a flexible return window and confirm road and weather alerts before checkout. Book lodging early in holiday weeks and build a cancellation option into any mountain plan.
