Road Trips From Portland, Maine: Casco Bay villages, the Midcoast and a longer Acadia escape
Portland is a natural starting point for coastal Maine, but the state gets longer as you head northeast. Freeport and the southern coast fit a quick outing; Camden deserves its own relaxed day; Acadia belongs to a proper overnight trip. Use Portland as a departure point, not a reason to race through the whole coast before dark.

Best weekend, 3-day and 7-day road trips from Portland, Maine
Two-day weekend
A two-day itinerary can focus on Freeport and the southern coast or one Midcoast harbor with an overnight. Pick one, rather than spending the weekend checking off every town.
Three-day trip
For three days, drive to the Midcoast, spend a full day around Camden or Boothbay Harbor and return via a different small-town stop if time allows.
Seven-day trip
Seven days allows Portland, the Midcoast and Acadia with separate overnight bases. If your trip falls in winter, simplify the park portion around roads that are actually open and plan around early darkness.
Freeport and the southern Maine coast
Choose Freeport and one Casco Bay-side stop for an easy low-mileage escape. Make room for a beach walk where seasonal access permits or a leisurely meal. Keep this a southern-coast day rather than adding Camden simply because the road continues north.
Boothbay and Camden on the Midcoast
Drive northeast with an overnight base in Boothbay Harbor or Camden. The pleasure is in harbors, village streets and the short detours off the main road; split the towns across days instead of treating the Midcoast as a quick Portland loop.
Acadia and Mount Desert Island
Make Acadia a multi-day destination with Bar Harbor or another Mount Desert Island base. Park Loop Road access is seasonal and specific road sections may be closed in winter. During high visitation periods, check vehicle-entry reservation rules for Cadillac Summit Road if you intend to drive it.
