Road Trips From Chicago: Lake Michigan shores, Illinois canyons and Wisconsin river towns
Chicago makes it easy to leave the skyline behind without pretending that every Midwest highlight belongs on the same weekend. The best first decision is whether you want shoreline, a trail through sandstone country, or a small-town overnight. Each direction makes a different trip; choose one and give it the time it deserves.

Best weekend, 3-day and 7-day road trips from Chicago
Two-day weekend
For two days, choose the Indiana shore for beaches and short trails, or Starved Rock with an overnight in Ottawa or Utica. Keep Chicago departure traffic out of your sightseeing budget.
Three-day trip
For three days, devote the extra day to Galena and the surrounding river-country towns. That makes time for historic streets and a countryside drive without racing back after dinner.
Seven-day trip
A seven-day Great Lakes trip can follow the south and east Lake Michigan shoreline with multiple overnight bases. Decide whether the week is about lakeshore nature or Wisconsin towns; a full lake circuit requires more driving than a casual weekend.
Indiana Dunes and the southern Lake Michigan shore
Follow the southeastern shoreline toward Indiana Dunes National Park. Lake and dunes are the point, so pick one beach or trail rather than collecting distant viewpoints. A short stop in Michigan City can work as a separate afternoon choice, but check current beach access and weather first.
Starved Rock and the Illinois River valley
Drive southwest to Starved Rock State Park for wooded ravines and seasonal waterfalls. Trail surfaces can be slick and parking constrained on busy days. Ottawa or Utica offers a natural overnight base, which is more useful than trying to tack on a second distant park.
Galena and the driftless hills
Go west toward Galena when you want historic streets, rolling farmland and a slower two-day drive. Spend the first day getting there and exploring town; use the second for nearby views and a relaxed return. Wisconsin Dells is a separate northern direction, not a casual Galena add-on.
