Road Trips From Austin: Hill Country towns, Fredericksburg and San Antonio history
The Hill Country begins surprisingly close to Austin, yet the best day here is not one long parade of overlooks. Choose a swimming hole, a town square, or a granite dome and build the day around it. Heat, limited trail capacity and reservation systems matter as much as distance.

Two-day weekend
A two-day Fredericksburg trip gives you an evening in town and one optional reserved outdoor activity the next morning. In hot weather, plan strenuous walking early.
Three-day trip
For three days, give San Antonio a dedicated missions day, a city day and a flexible return rather than combining the Hill Country with every mission in a single drive.
Seven-day trip
A seven-day Hill Country loop can pair separate overnight bases around Fredericksburg, Wimberley and San Antonio. Arrange any park reservations first and keep long outdoor hikes out of the hottest afternoons.
Fredericksburg and the Hill Country
Take the westbound Hill Country route for Fredericksburg’s Main Street, German-Texan heritage and a relaxed overnight. Enchanted Rock is an optional separate outdoor day; it is not a casual quick walk after a full afternoon of shopping.
Wimberley and the Blanco River area
Head southwest toward Wimberley for small-town wandering, a countryside drive and a single swimming or hiking destination if conditions allow. Swimming-site reservations, water quality and seasonal restrictions can change; check the specific site before promising a swim.
San Antonio historic missions
Drive south for a history-centered trip. Walk a manageable portion of the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park and allow separate time for the city center. The mission sites are spread out: use the official park map rather than assuming they are all one downtown walking loop.
