Suggested route and day-by-day choices
Day 1 — Leave Miami and settle into the Upper Keys
Make Key Largo your first base rather than rushing straight to the end of US 1. Visit a welcoming waterfront spot, check conditions for any snorkeling or paddling you want to book, and leave time for an unplanned meal. Boat excursions are not interchangeable with a quick roadside stop: reserve them on a day when you can protect the schedule.
Day 2 — Islamorada to Marathon
Continue through Islamorada and spend the middle of the trip in one place long enough to enjoy it. Stop only where parking is designated, and choose one paid or guided activity rather than several time-sensitive reservations. Marathon is a sensible overnight base if you want an unrushed arrival in Key West the following day.
Day 3 — The Lower Keys and Key West
The Seven Mile Bridge is a memorable part of the drive, but keep your eyes on the road and leave photos for an approved stopping location. Give Key West its own afternoon and evening. Its historic streets and waterfront work better on foot than as a drive-by checklist.
Optional extra day — Dry Tortugas is a different trip
Dry Tortugas cannot be reached by car. If it is on your wish list, reserve a separate ferry or seaplane excursion departing Key West and allow the full day. Weather can affect departures; an island outing should never be scheduled as though it were a short stop on the highway.
