Letchworth State Park follows the Genesee River through a deep gorge in western New York, with major waterfalls and overlooks spread across a long park road. The common mistake is entering at whichever gate a GPS chooses and then spending more time repositioning the car than enjoying the gorge.
Start with the south end for the classic waterfalls
Upper and Middle Falls near the Glen Iris area form the iconic Letchworth scene, with the Genesee Arch Bridge adding a dramatic backdrop above Upper Falls. If this is your first visit, use the southern entrances and make these falls the anchor rather than beginning at the far north end.
Then decide whether you want overlooks or trails
After the major falls, move north through selected canyon overlooks or commit to a hike. Trying to stop at every roadside viewpoint creates diminishing returns. Inspiration Point and other broad overlooks work best when they provide a different angle on the gorge.
The park is bigger than a waterfall stop
Letchworth covers more than 14,000 acres and includes a nature center, trails, camping and recreation areas in addition to the gorge. That scale explains why the park has several entrances and separate activity zones.
Use the correct entrance
New York State Parks lists different gates for the main waterfall area, campground, pool/north end and Mount Morris Dam. Look at the park map before routing; mapping apps may choose an entrance that is technically correct but wrong for your actual priority.
Current closures matter
Trail construction, storm impacts and long-term closures can affect individual segments. Check the current park page and downloadable map before assuming a trail connection shown in an old blog post is still available.
Fall is beautiful and busy
Peak foliage is an obvious draw, but summer weekends and event periods can also be crowded. Arrive early for easier parking at the south-end waterfall area. Shoulder seasons can provide more space, though wet or icy trails require extra care.
Pair it with western New York, not Manhattan
Letchworth fits naturally with the Finger Lakes, Rochester, Buffalo or a western New York road trip. It is not a casual New York City side trip. Keeping the route regional gives enough time for the gorge rather than turning the day into highway mileage.
